Apparently its called a "trivet"
I recently made a trivet (for putting hot dishes on so you don't burn the table) for a friend of mine. Here it is just off the table, and then cleaned up and oiled. It's made form red oak, and then oiled with linseed oil. The finish looks much nicer in real-life. Overall, I'm quite pleased with how it came out.
